The Future is Green: How I’m Living Sustainably in 2025
Living sustainably isn’t just a trend – it’s becoming a necessity. As we dive into 2025, I’m excited to share my personal journey toward a more eco-conscious lifestyle. From small daily changes to bigger commitments, here’s how I’m planning to make a difference this year.
Taking Shorter, Cooler Showers
Living in NYC, last fall’s drought was a wake-up call. In a city surrounded by rivers, experiencing water scarcity really drove home how precious our water resources are. While I absolutely love my long, hot showers (especially during winter!), I’m committing to being more mindful of my water usage. Since I rarely take baths anyway, this feels like a manageable first step toward conservation.
Here are some things I plan to do to help make sure I commit to shorter showers,
- Set a timer.
- Turn the water off as you scrub your body
- Invest in a water saving showerhead.
Embracing Sustainable Period Products
I’m finally taking the plunge into using period cups and discs! While they might seem intimidating at first, these medical-grade silicone alternatives offer a safer, more sustainable option compared to conventional products. With growing concerns about toxic ingredients in traditional period products, this switch feels both environmentally and health conscious.

Going “Flexi Plantarian”
While my dietary restrictions prevent me from going fully plant-based, I’m excited to incorporate more plant-focused meals into my weekly routine. My goal is to enjoy plant-based dishes two to three times a week. I got the New York Times cooking subscription and filter for plant-based meal recipes. As someone who already loves lentils and beans (and is slowly warming up to tofu!), this transition feels natural. Plus, the environmental impact of reducing meat consumption makes this change even more meaningful

Leveling Up My Sewing Skills
Basic mending skills? Check. But this year, I’m ready to tackle bigger projects with a sewing machine. From repairs to upcycling adventures, I’m determined to extend the life of my clothing through DIY solutions. While I’m not the most naturally skilled with my hands, I’m hoping practice will boost my confidence and capabilities.
Becoming a Composting Champion
Living in NYC with building-provided composting means I have no more excuses! I’ll admit I’ve been pretty lazy about composting in the past, especially with getting my kids on board. But 2025 is the year we make this a family priority and do our part in reducing food waste.
Here are ways to make composting easier:
- Freeze scraps in your freezer for easy storage until you can drop off
- Invest in an odor reducing composting bin or an electric composter to minimize odors.
Clean Beauty Journey
Perhaps my biggest challenge this year is transitioning to clean beauty products. After diving into research on sites like the Environmental Working Group, I’ve learned just how many conventional beauty products contain potentially harmful ingredients and microplastics. As a dedicated MAC Studio Fix user, this switch won’t be easy, but I’m committed to finding safer alternatives that work just as well. So far, I am liking the brand, Ilia, they have high and extremely popular quality clean makeup and are available at Sephora!
Moving Forward
These changes might seem small individually, but together they represent a significant shift toward a more sustainable lifestyle. I’m excited to embrace these challenges and would love to hear your own sustainable living tips and experiences in the comments below!
