Green Friday instead of black friday

Ethical brands with green Friday sales

While this blog is about green Friday sales, it is important to understand the context. Black Friday generally is associated with everything that ethical/sustainable consumption isn’t.  As such ethical/sustainable brands may be reticent to participate in Black Friday in its traditional form.  And that reticence is clearly understandable.  How else could one associate ethical/sustainable with anything Black Friday? Just the overt greed that causes otherwise good folks to trample on others in the name of getting a deal is simply incompatible with ethical/sustainable consumption.  My point here is I fully understand why sustainable brands may choose not to participate in Black Friday.  But there’s something that bothers me a little about some indiscriminate anti-Black Friday campaigns that I see out there. Not everyone has the means to purchase ethically-made gifts at full price, especially if purchasing gifts for multiple people. The way I see it, there is not a need for the excesses of Black Friday or holiday shopping generally, but the cut-prices of Black Friday and Cyber Week are a great opportunity for those individuals and families with more limited resources to purchase ethically made products at more accessible price points. Plus, let’s face it, ethical/sustainable businesses ultimately need to be sustainable in terms of revenue!  This brings to me to green Friday.

What is green Friday?

According to bustle magazine, green Friday was started to raise awareness about societies shopping habits.  It encourages people to resist buying what they don’t need on black Friday, support sustainable brands should they need to shop or not buy at all.
